 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya or Navodaya Vidyalaya is an education project implemented by the Government of India. The main objective of this experiment is to provide quality education to the smallest village in India, that too without reference to any socio-economic ability of the student.

Navodaya Vidyalaya was first established in 1985 by the then "Human Resource Development Minister" P.V. It was the brainchild of Narasimha Rao (who later became the Prime Minister of India). First known as Navodaya Vidyalaya, the name of these institutions was later changed to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. More than 550 in all India. There is a school. Free education is provided to every student in these schools. Students are recruited to these schools through a nationwide entrance examination. This exam is conducted district wise.

Bright students are recruited in these schools through a nationwide entrance exam conducted by CBSE in each district and are admitted to class VI. Till 1998 these exams were conducted by NCERT. These tests are mainly optional and mostly non-verbal. These exams are prepared according to the abilities of rural students.

Now admission is also given in 9th and 11th standard. This admission is also given through optional and subject wise examination (in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies). This interim admission is given to fill up the vacancies left by old students leaving the school.
